Dell to offer preinstalled Ubuntu Desktops and Laptops
You may have noticed in a previous posting it was noted Dell was also considering preinstalling Linux on their shipped PCs. You might also have been curious to which distro they would choose. Today Dell Inc. and Canonical Ltd. released a joint statement confirming Ubuntu Linux 7.04 would be installed as an option on some of their desktop and laptop models.
This probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise to Ubuntu supporters, who have watched the Linux distro surge in popularity recently. I was expecting either Ubuntu or Fedora to be chosen by Dell, and it would seem that’s the way most requests sent into Dell have been voiced.
If all goes well, I expect we should see Ubuntu or similar Linux distributions being rolled out on Dell server applications soon as well.

This is quite an intersting move from Dell’s perspective. I’d imagine them sticking to Windows for the long haul.
